During World War II, reclusive widower Tom Oakley surprises his fellow villagers by taking in William, a nine-year-old evacuee from London. Tom soon realises that his young charge has been physically and emotionally abused by his mother and devotes his time to helping William to read and write, and show him the kindness he had not known at home. William makes new friends and thrives in his new home, and his presence helps Tom reintegrate in the community he has avoided since his wife’s death. But as his tenth birthday looms, William is summoned back to the city…
