De-Haan does it again!

The Folkestone Youth Project (FYP) has emerged following work carried out by one of Go Folkestone’s action groups looking into issues concerning the younger members of Folkestone’ society.  The FYP is chaired by Michael Howard QC, MP and was formed just over a year ago with a brief to provide an appropriate facility for young people in Folkestone. With Michael’s active support, FYP Vice-Chairman, Philip Carter, has been the driving force behind the organisation and has been instrumental in attracting a powerful committee to promote the “Solutions Not Just Sanctions” practical philosophy.  We are delighted to report the acquisition of a building rent-free for five years on the Park Farm Estate, adjacent to the new Academy; currently the site of the Channel School. It is expected that the building will enter service in Spring/Summer 2005.

The donation of this building is a direct result of the generosity, yet again, of Roger De Haan, who having purchased a warehouse at Kingsmead, Park Farm West, to enable a widened road entrance to the new academy, found only half was required for the widening! As both Michael Howard and Philip Carter had previously made a general request to Roger De-Haan to see if he would be able to assist the FYP in finding a suitable building for the FOLKESTONE YOUTH CENTRE the “Half a Warehouse” was offered!

Philip Carter said: - It all came about when I was having one of my regular meetings with Roger (Mainly in my capacity as Chairman of Go Folkestone, of which he is a major supporter) and he said “I seem to have ended up with half a warehouse, would you like it for the Youth Project?” Yes I said! How big is it? Drawing produced! That’s big enough! Agreed terms, and shook hands on the deal.
This is yet another fine example of Roger De-Haan’s, friendship, continuing commitment and generosity to Folkestone. We have before us in our community a bountiful benefactor of whom every coastal town in Kent, and else ware, is rightly and justifiably envious.
