Go Folkestone Magazine, September Edition.
I have to write and congratulate all concerned, but especially Ann Berry, for
the creation and production of this smart, eye catching September edition. The
cover itself reflects the quality of the contents. I look back at the initial
brave attempts, so long ago, when, somehow, without much supporting funds, Go
Folkestone members started trying to draw attention to the group by producing
something to circulate information.
Boy! What a long way we have come since those first, brave amateur attempts.
We now have a very professional magazine with interesting contents not buried in
excessive advertisements and, of particular value, a calendar of current and
forth coming events. It must be a lot of work for all concerned. Thanks to them.
How about suggesting to the local press that they promote an annual prize for
the best produced booklet of this type circulating in the Folkestone area, or
wider, which supplements their continuous distribution on a weekly basis?
Final thought. Reading of the trouble with unruly youth in Cheriton, maybe they
should look for a new project like the Folkestone Youth Project that recently
opened. Folkestone was very fortunate in obtaining that site in the harbour,
which will emerge as a focal point for young people to gather, but is a bit
remote from Cheriton.
I think we have clearly established that it is essential to provide out youth
with “sumfinkto do” and “sumwhere t go”. A large portion of our youth, have long
been starved of the facilities and attention provided else where and this
creates unsocial behaviour. We are working on it at one end of the town only.

Folkestone Museum under threat.
I read in a letter to the local newspaper that the Folkestone museum is under
threat of closure. Attempts are being made to deregister it from being a museum
ie, effectively closing it down. It sounds as though KCC is doing this without
“public consultation” that is supposed to have occurred. I don’t feel that we as
residents have been asked at all, the plans for closure seems to be a fait
accompli. Once the contents have been disbanded and replaced with “ dumbed down”
primary school level” touchy feely” displays (of items that obviously don’t
matter if they get broken), which is what they seem to be suggesting, we will be
without a dedicated place ie museum, to display items that doubtless will be
found, be they Roman or from other periods of history’
Our Folkestone Museum is being threatened with de-registration. We need to let
people know that if they want their voices heard, we have to tell KCC that we
want them to halt their plans. Then a full public consultation needs to occur,
to discuss the possible options for the museum and its important fossil
collection and Roman artefacts etc.
