Old School Art
Sonia Cufley was born in 1980 and has lived in Folkestone all
her life. From an early age Sonia has loved drawing and painting from
imagination. Sonia has developed her interest and now creates large scale
paintings on canvas using a variety of media including gold leaf, marble
chippings, dried flowers and acrylic paints. Her paintings are inspired by some
of the countryside around Folkestone especially some of the outlying villages
such as Newington and Denton. Sonia believes the autumnal colour of trees,
fields and wild flowers provide the inspiration for the unique colour and
movement captured by her paintings.
Sonia studied at Ashford College Art and Design and attained a Distinction.
Sonia started Old School Art in 2007 and has already recently exhibited at the
Nevill Gallery in Canterbury and also Canterbury University for the Creative
Arts in association with the Canterbury Festival.
Sonia hopes to exhibit at St Georges Street Gallery in Folkestone organised by
Strange Cargo and this will be the second time she has exhibited in her home
town.
When she is not painting, Sonia enjoys visiting art galleries around Kent and
especially the Tate Modern in London.
Sonia started Old School Art in the wake of Folkestone’s “Art-lead
regeneration”-the buzz-phrase linked to the new drive to promote the enjoyment
of art for everyone.
“I personally perform all the creative aspects involved in my work and I aspire
to create paintings that capture the spirit of nature, and by creating art I am
fulfilling the person I was created to be”.
