Folkestone Artists Co-operative at the Harbour
As many of you know the Folkestone’s Fishermans, Farmers &
Art Market has been going for a year by the harbour, between The George Public
House & Chummy’s Sea Food Stall. This has taken place every Sunday from 10 am to
4 pm.
It has become a hive of activity for both residents and visitors alike. The
fresh take away food stalls are always busy, and other stall holders have
received much interest in their wares. If you have never been down there, just
take a Sunday stroll there to find out what is available.
The Folkestone Artists Cooperative (FAC) has been there during the spring and
summer months from March to the end of September. I have been working for FAC,
organising along with Phyllis McDowell, stalls for the art and craft members who
wish to sell and show their artistry. The artists initially set up stalls for
the 4 weeks prior to Christmas 2006. At first the stalls were held along with
the other stall holders by “The George” but as the summer drew on at the end of
July we moved through the arches on The Stade by the fisherman’s harbour.
With a little more room along the Harbour side it was decided to try out
workshops for children. For about 3 or 4 Sundays from end August to end
September we helped the children with painting shells. This was a great success
with many children joining in, even a couple of adults.
For the people out on a walk along The Stade and also the clients of The Ship,
it was an interesting exercise to watch. It is intended to continue with this
activity, hopefully on the Sundays prior to Christmas and from next Easter. The
next workshops will cover different artist with their particular talents.
