VE Day May 2005

This will not be as grand as our last year’s very eventful VE DAY 60th Anniversary when we held a street party. The fun-packed street party was held on Sunday the 8th May 2005 on The Bayle with huge numbers of people attending the celebration. A church service in St. Eanswythe & St. Mary’s started the celebrations, with Michael Howard coming along at the last moment to open The Street Party. (Remember this was 3 days after the General Election).

The local people were entertained with dancing in the street by St Eanswythe & Channel Schools, music & songs by FHODS, & Folkestone Pipes & Drums.

Eamonn Rooney, along with Brian Hewett of Go Folkestone, & Dave Brocklehurst of The Kent Aircraft Museum transformed the Woodward Hall into a historic memorial to the times of the WWII with a wonderful exhibition. Masses of residents were in awe at the amount of memorabilia on show. The street was not only lined with veterans and visitors, but some original 1940’s vehicles, including a military ambulance and motorbike.

Eamonn, Folkestone’s local historian also transported people back in time with a walk around Folkestones’ little-known historic landmarks. He said: “There was a lot of military presence from 1940 to 1947, though not many people saw it. The beach was covered in barbed wire and blockades and a lot of people were evacuated from the town”.

The party was laid out with a long table plus chairs, with many people bringing & sharing their food as requested. Some of Go Folkestone members & Bayle residents gave up their time, food, drink etc to make the day go with a swing. It also gave to the visitors a feeling of belonging as everybody was so friendly to one another.

The celebrations finished with a raffle & balloon race, when after a beautiful afternoon the wind suddenly became quite strong, blowing many of the tables & chairs around. But not to worry EVERYBODY HAD ENJOYED THE DAY & IT WAS TIME TO GO HOME……
